MALVAR, Batangas – A privately-funded economic zone in this province that was initially billed as a burgeoning hub for business process outsourcing (BPO) operations is now also poised to play an important role in large-scale food processing.

The management of Aboitiz Construction, Inc. (ACI) said on Thursday that the company is on track to complete later this year a seven-hectare food manufacturing project within the LIMA Estate.

It will integrate innovative construction practices as it aims to contribute to the booming economy of Batangas, according to ACI executive director Antonio Peñalver.

In a message to the Philippine News Agency, he said the project is being pursued in collaboration with Big E Food Corporation (BEFC), the company responsible for the Lemon Square brand of pastries.

“It is a privilege to be entrusted with this project, knowing that it represents more than just a facility – it signifies dedication to quality, innovation, and the pursuit towards excellence,” Peñalver said.

He said the project is expected to minimize environmental impact, featuring advanced plumbing systems and showcasing water-saving fixtures and smart water management technologies.

Digital construction management tools for scheduling, budgeting, and communication to streamline project management processes shall also be implemented.

This will be applied to three key buildings integral to the food manufacturing process, which includes a production plant, operations, and maintenance building, along with other minor ancillary structures.

It resonates with the mission of contributing to nation-building through projects that improve the lives of the Filipinos, Peñalver added.

BEFC chairperson Ernesto Vergel De Dios said the project looks to contribute to the local economy.

“I look forward to establishing a strong partnership with Aboitiz Construction through this project,” he said.

LIMA Estate is touted as the largest privately-owned industrial park in the country, and is being supported by the provincial government.

Governor Hermilando Mandanas earlier referred to the LIMA ecozone as the next “digital city,” attracting more BPO firms and causing companies like the Aboitiz group to invest heavily in infrastructure.

On April 19, 2023, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. approved Proclamation No. 204, designating several parcels of land located in Barangays Santiago, Luta Sur and Bagong Pook in Malvar for the expansion of the Lima Technology Center–Special Economic Zone. (PNA)
