KORONADAL CITY – Environmentalists have released back to the sea an adult male spinner dolphin (Stenella longirostris) found stranded at the coast of Barangay Datu in Kiamba, Sarangani.
Felix Robles, community environment and natural resources officer (CENRO) of Kiamba, said in an interview Friday that the dolphin was saved from due to the prompt response of their office, Philippine Coast Guard, and the maritime police, among others.
“No traces of injury or illness were observed in the dolphin, which weighed around 35 kilograms and measured an estimated length of 180 centimeters,” Robles said.
Members of the local Bantay Dagat (Sea Watch) said the dolphin was seen separated from its pod since 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Following its release on Thursday, Robles said the dolphin was seen swimming back to open waters.
Sarangani Bay is a haven for various marine mammals, including the dolphins.
Robles said spinner dolphins are famous for showcasing their acrobatic skills.
Interestingly, he said the dolphins minimize sonar use at night, possibly to rest or continue foraging in the ocean. (PNA)
