ILOILO CITY – Traffic enforcers here will be allowed to observe “heatstroke break” as they perform their function amid continued exposure to extreme heat.

Iloilo City Traffic Management Unit (ICTMU) head Uldarico Garbanzos, in a media interview on Monday, said while traffic enforcers are expected to be visible, especially in choke areas during rush hours, they are encouraged to take a break to hydrate.

“They should break to rehydrate because of too much heat. We always remind them to bring water to prevent complications,” he said.

From noon until 4 p.m., they are not expected to be always visible in the middle of the streets, but would only be “reactionary” should there be congestion or accidents.

“For that period, they are just beside the streets so they won’t suffer from heat waves,” he added.

Garbanzos said there are inspectors to ensure they follow the measures.

Mayor Jerry Treñas said the closed-circuit televisions of the city government installed in various intersections are a big help because they would know if there are congestions.

“When there are congestions, Col. Garbanzos is informed, so he can direct traffic enforcers,” Treñas said.

Iloilo City has been experiencing a high heat index for the past months, prompting the local government to suspend face-to-face classes and the Monday flag-raising ceremony.

On Monday, the city was forecast to experience a heat index of 44°C.

In-person classes in the city are also suspended, except those with air-conditioned and well-ventilated classrooms that can withstand too much heat. (PNA)
