ILOILO CITY – The provincial government of Iloilo, through its Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and the Office of Civil Defense Western Visayas (OCD VI), are collaborating on an initiative aimed at integrating community-based DRRM (CBDRRM) into the National Service Training Program (NSTP) curriculum.

PDRRM officer Cornelio Salinas on Thursday said the provincial government is expected to fund the Training of Trainers (ToT) to be facilitated by the OCD.

The initiative targets 45 trainers to handle the CBDRRM training, focusing on civil welfare training (CWTS) and literacy training service (LTS).

“The students, after undergoing training, can be responders and CBDRRM planners. They can form part of our reservist masterlist because we have the Iloilo Provincial Civil Defense Service doing DRRM duties for Iloilo province,” he said in an interview.

Salinas said they will be targeting students from universities and colleges situated in typhoon tracks, and hoped to start the program this July.

Salinas, joined by DPDRRM chief of administration and training division Alfonso Baldonado III, met with OCD VI regional director Raul Fernandez to formalize the collaboration on Monday.

Baldonado, in a statement, said that involving the academic sector would significantly impact students, instilling disaster risk reduction and management awareness from an early age. (PNA)
