MANILA – The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the municipal government of Corcurea in Romblon province signed on Tuesday a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the development of the Corcuera Port.

DOTr Undersecretary for Maritime Elmer Sarmiento said the project will benefit passengers and trade in the Mimaropa Region.

Specifically, Sarmiento said the port would be used in exporting animals such as cattle and sheep, as well as other local goods and products.

“Itong pagbibigay natin ng pondo (Provision of funds) to develop ports, rehabilitate or construction of new ones, will help a lot, especially in the isolated and remote islands, to connect them and build their island economies,” he said.

On the other hand, Corcuera Mayor Elmer Fruelda thanked the DOTr for the project and highlighted the benefits it will bring to the local population.

“Ang impact nito ay napakalaki dahil mapapabilis ang phasing ng development at 'yung hirap na nararanasan ng aking mga kababayan kapag nalilipat kami ng lugar dahil sa hirap ng pagdaong (This will have a big impact because it will accelerate development and address challenges for the locals such as difficulties in landing boats),” Fruelda said.

According to a bid bulletin from the DOTr, the Corcuera Port Development Project involves the repair of a damaged pier and has a budget of around PHP20 million. (PNA)
